about

This song was commissioned by Isa who wanted something kind of like Fear For the Storm from the podcast The Strange Case of Starship Iris. I decided to make it about going on an adventure on a boat! Isa then asked for it to include a found family theme, which I love.

I had a lot of fun writing and recording this song! Many thanks to the musicians from Musiversal and mixer David Scott for their work on this!

Shockingly, I wrote this song before I ever watched Our Flag Means Death lol. :D

lyrics

THE STARS WILL GUIDE US HOME

When I set out to sea, I won't set out alone.
I dream at night of how it'll be: a sturdy ship, a crew of my own.
When I'm out on the waves, I will not ask for more.
I'll know I'm on my way when I can no longer see the shore.

And the blue sea will fight us, and a new place will find us,
And the stars will guide us home.

Oh, I'd be safe at port, but that's not what ships are for.
We learn to work together whenever we enter a storm.
I cannot win without my friends, they let me try and fail.
We can't control the wind, but we can direct the sail.

And the blue sea will fight us, and a new place will find us,
And the stars will guide us wherever we go.

Our boat on the ocean is a speck on the world,
Whales like mighty ghosts below.
Our map has no borders, no names, only shores.
We'll fill in the blanks as we go.

Eyes on the horizon, all hands on deck.
You can leave anytime but it's a long swim back.
Home is where our anchor hits the murky sand.
Eyes on the horizon and hand in hand.

And the blue sea will fight us, and a new place will find us,
And the stars will guide us wherever we go.
The blue sea will fight us, and a new place will find us,
And the stars will guide us home.
